MEDIA TRAINING

Last month I have given you some media interview techniques to use when dealing with the media, so this month I thought it only fitting to explain the benefits of media training and how it can create confidence, internal strength and a willingness to want to deal with the media, no matter what the topic.

The media can be a very powerful tool for you and your business if used effectively and it’s something worth considering doing more of in 2017.

Having worked in all forms of media throughout my career, I’d have to say that there’s not too many people that don’t get a case of the nerves when it comes to doing interviews, but what I can say is it can be overcome easily with training.  

Media Training is something any spokesperson of a company or organisation should undertake.  Even if it’s to learn how to deal with your nerves and how to express yourself with correct body language, it’d be well worth it.  But it’s not just dealing with nerves that media training can assist you with, everything from interview techniques, how to present well on camera and how to deal with difficult journalists are addressed during media training courses.

Media Training also gives people an in depth understanding of the media and what it is they are looking for when it comes to you and your story.  The media aren’t the evil people they are often made out to be, they are just doing a job and trying to write their stories objectively.  It’s up to you to deliver the information to them to keep the stories balanced.

What it all comes down to, is being comfortable in telling your story and getting your message out there, no matter what the situation may be.  


Media Interview Tips:

  

  1. 1. Don’t Waffle – keep your answers direct and to the point

  2. 2. Be prepared and know what you’re talking about

  3. 3. Don’t Lie – when people lie it’s obvious

  4. 4. Show emotion where necessary – if it’s a happy story, don’t be afraid to smile

  5. 5. Relax – try and think calming thoughts

At the end of the day, remember the media aren’t out to get you, they’re out to tell stories to the best of their abilities.  If you use the media effectively, they can be a very powerful tool to get your message into the public arena and attract some free publicity for your business.
